Star Indian left-arm spinner Sai Kishore picked a five-wicket haul to take Surrey to a five-wicket win against Durham on Thursday at Chester-le-Street, as they look the favourites for their fourth consecutive title in Division One of the County Championship, extending their lead over other teams.

Kishore took 5/72 as Rory Burns’ team dismissed Durham for 344 in their second innings and Sam Curran made 40 to help Surrey score the paltry 176 runs they required for their fourth win of the season.

The three points gained from the game do little to alleviate Durham’s relegation worries, with their exact fate hinging on the outcome of the Sussex vs Yorkshire clash on Friday.

But Day 3 didn’t unfold as Surrey had hoped in the morning. For 45 minutes, Durham’s Graham Clark and Codi Yusuf handled the spin of Kishore and Dan Lawrence with relative ease.

Clark’s 71-run stand with Yusuf had increased Durham’s lead to 121 and that went up to 136 at the first interval, when they were 305/6, with the latter unbeaten on 38.

After lunch, Durham lost their last four wickets for 33 runs in 10 overs and the magnitude of Surrey’s task became clear.

After batting for 149 minutes and facing 117 deliveries, Yusuf was caught at the wicket by Ben Foakes off Kishore for 43. The latter then dismissed Bas de Leede for just five runs and Matthew Potts for six to wrap up Durham’s innings and bag his first five-wicket haul for Surrey.

Earlier, opting to bat first, Durham were bowled out for a paltry 153, with Daniel Worrall picking four wickets. Kishore picked two wickets in that innings as well, dismissing wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson for just two runs and De Leede for a four-ball duck.

Surrey scored 322 in their first innings, with Dan Lawrence being the highest scorer with 88. Ben Raine picked five wickets.

In the second innings, Emilio Gay missed out on his 10th first-class hundred by a whisker, as he was dismissed by Sam Curran on 99. He was the highest scorer in Durham’s 344.
