Samsung will not be the first to enter with this form factor which has been done by Huawei in China this year.
The tri-fold phone could be the next phase of the foldable segment
Samsung is reportedly developing a tri-fold flagship smartphone set to launch next year. The South Korean tech giant aims to strengthen its position in the foldable smartphone market amid rising competition from brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Honor, particularly following Huawei’s debut of the world’s first tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT Ultimate Edition, in China.
Other manufacturers, including Xiaomi, Honor, and Oppo, are also rumoured to be working on their own tri-fold devices, designed to expand into significantly larger screens. Samsung is said to have its tri-fold technology ready, with its supply chain prepared for the upcoming product.
Additionally, a report from ZDNet Korea, citing industry sources, reveals that Samsung Electronics is planning to introduce both an entry-level clamshell-style folding phone and a tri-fold model capable of folding the screen twice, both of which are expected to be released in 2025.
However, it’s noteworthy that orders for foldable OLED panels have declined by over 10 per cent, as the demand for Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 did not meet expectations following their launch earlier this year.
However, this is not the first time that the tech giant is tipped to introduce a tri-fold smartphone. Earlier the company released prototypes of two smartphones named Flex G and Flex S, with different folding mechanisms that resemble Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate smartphone and Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 tri-fold smartphone concept which was unveiled in August.
The foldable smartphone segment is becoming extremely competitive. Recently tech giant Google also ventured into the market with its first-ever foldable smartphone, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold which comes with a price tag of Rs 1.73 Lakh.
Recently, several reports suggested that Samsung might come with an affordable version of a foldable smartphone. However, the company has now refuted all the speculations saying that it has no plans to make a Galaxy Z Fold device with a more affordable price tag.
