‘He handed the book to me, and he said, “You have to play this,”‘ Ronan recalled to The Times on September 15.
‘Jack Lowden and I were trying to keep an eye on the representation of Rona, how nothing else matters to her except alcohol but also remembering that she is human, so anyone can see themselves in her.
‘If you find people that you love and you trust creatively, why would you not want to keep working with them? We have very high expectations for one another — when I tried out Rona’s Orcadian accent on him for The Outrun, he said, “You’re not doing that, are you?”‘
Saoirse revealed she is embracing playing flawed characters after her latest role as alcoholic Rona.
The Irish actress admitted she now gives ‘less of a f*** about things being palatable’ and is enjoying playing characters who aren’t always the most likeable and have challenging qualities.

‘I felt confident enough in my ability, but also confident enough in who I was. I didn’t feel like I was being held down by a need to only play likeable people.
‘Because I got to shape it creatively, I just gave less of a f**k about things being palatable.’
The movie, which was released in cinemas on September 27, is based on journalist Amy Liptrot’s award-winning 2016 memoir about returning to her home in Orkney to deal with her past, and her addictions.
