Blackpool has replaced Glasgow as the area where males have the lowest life expectancy in Britain.

The average lifespan was shorter in all of Britain in the two years to 2023 – with children born in deprived areas expected to die up to 13 years earlier.

Life expectancy in England fell to 79.1 years for men and 83 years for women, Office for National Statistics data shows.

The worst statistics were in Blackpool, with a boy born between 2021 and 2023 expected to live an average of 73.1 years and a girl 78.9 years.

By contrast, men in Hart, Hampshire have an average lifespan of 83.4 years, while women born in Kensington and Chelsea are expected to live for 86.5 years.

Greg Ceely of the ONS said the data from 2021 to 2023 ‘suggests we are yet to see a recovery from the decrease in life expectancy during the pandemic’.
