South Africa achieved a decisive win against Zimbabwe by an innings and 236 runs after the latter collapsed post-lunch on Day 3 of the second Test at the Queens Sports Club on Tuesday.
Pacers Corbin Bosch (four for 38) and Codi Yusuf (two for 38), along with left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy (three for 77), were instrumental in bowling out Zimbabwe for 220 in their second innings.
Despite fielding a second-string side, South Africa dominated the game from the outset, thanks to stand-in skipper Wiaan Mulder’s Protea record of 367*, leading them to a total of 626/5 declared.
Zimbabwe showed some resistance, losing just two wickets before lunch on Tuesday after resuming at 51/1. Nick Welch scored 55 and skipper Craig Ervine made 49 after the dismissal of overnight batter Takudzwanashe Kaitano (40).
However, Zimbabwe collapsed after lunch against the pace bowling of Yusuf and Bosch, losing six wickets for 31 runs before Wellington Masakadza and Tanaka Chivanga added 36 for the last wicket.
This win against Zimbabwe marked South Africa’s tenth consecutive Test victory, going past their previous best streak of nine victories between 2001 and 2003.
South Africa, who won the first Test at the same venue by 328 runs, bagged a dominant 2-0 series victory despite resting most of the cricketers who won in the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s in June.
Zimbabwe were without key batters Brian Bennett, who was concussed in the first Test and Ben Curran, who missed the series because of a broken hand.
Mulder and wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne were the sole cricketers who played in South Africa’s victory over Australia. Despite introducing five debutants over the two games, South Africa still outperformed their neighbours.
Zimbabwe and South Africa will meet again in Harare on Monday at the start of a T20 triangular series, which includes New Zealand as well.
