Mohammed Shami’s Test future is in doubt ahead of India’s upcoming tour of England as selectors are not keen on persisting with the veteran pacer.
As per a report by TOI, Shami’s form and fitness in the longest format of the game has selectors worried. Along with the uncertainty over Jasprit Bumrah, selectors are not too keen on Shami.
“As of now, Shami isn’t an automatic pick. It’s been months since he has come back to international cricket but he has barely been in rhythm. While IPL performances are not usually considered while picking India teams, Shami is struggling to finish his run-up and the ball is not carrying to the wicketkeeper like it used to before his Achilles tendon injury after the 2023 ODI World Cup. He invariably goes back to the dressing room after a short spell for recovery,” BCCI sources were quoted as saying by TOI.
Originally selectors were looking at Shami as the leader of India’s pacer-bowling unit in England but his injuries have raised doubts.
“The initial plan was to ensure the team can at least play either of Shami or Bumrah in every Test. However, if Bumrah is rested for a match and Shami struggles to pull through, it will be a big issue. They are trying to understand the problem Shami may be facing,” sources added.

Selectors reportedly are not too impressed with Mohammed Siraj and his ability to act as a leader in the absence of Bumrah or Shami.
The report also goes on to add that the consensus among selectors is that a left-arm seamer could be useful in seaming conditions and are eyeing up the trio of Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed and Yash Dayal.

The Indian team for the tour of England will be announced during the end of third week of May while India A team will be announced early next week.
If there is one certainty among the rookies for the Test tour, it has to be Tamil Nadu southpaw Sai Sudharsan, who has made an impression. If all goes well, he will either open or come to bat at No.3.
