Sensex Ends 455 Points Higher, Nifty Above 25,000; HCL Tech Rises 2%

Equity benchmarks BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 opened on a positive note on Monday, May 26, tracking mixed global cues

Stock Market Today: Indian benchmark equity indices closed higher on Monday, May 26, 2025, buoyed by strong gains in Auto, IT, and Metal sectors. Sentiment improved after U.S. President Donald Trump announced an extension of the trade talks deadline with the European Union, helping to ease immediate global trade concerns.

The BSE Sensex rose 455.3 points, or 0.56 per cent, to settle at 82,176.45, after touching an intraday high of 82,492. The NSE Nifty50 also advanced 148 points, or 0.6 per cent, to close at 25,001.15.

In the broader market, the Nifty Midcap100 and Nifty Smallcap100 indices posted gains of 0.67 per cent and 0.37 per cent, respectively.

All sectoral indices on the NSE ended in the green. The Nifty Auto index led the charge with a gain of 1.05 per cent, followed by IT (up 1.02 per cent) and FMCG (up 0.97 per cent).

On the Sensex, 22 of the 30 constituents closed in positive territory. Mahindra & Mahindra, HCL Technologies, Tata Motors, Nestle India, ITC, and Hindustan Unilever were among the top gainers, rising up to 2.17 per cent. Conversely, stocks like Eternal, UltraTech Cement, Power Grid, Kotak Mahindra Bank, NTPC, and Tata Steel declined, with losses of up to 4.55 per cent.

Meanwhile, market volatility ticked higher, with the India VIX—often referred to as the fear gauge—rising 4.66 per cent to settle at 18.08.

Global Market 

Asian markets advanced in early trade after President Trump extended the deadline for implementing 50% tariffs on EU imports to July 9, easing trade tensions. Japan’s Nikkei rose 0.7%, while the broader Topix added 0.53%. South Korea’s Kospi gained 0.7%, and Australia’s ASX 200 hovered around the flat line.

In the US, stock futures edged up during early Asian trading hours, although US equity markets will remain closed today in observance of Memorial Day.

On Friday, US indices ended lower across the board. The S&P 500 slipped 0.67%, the Nasdaq Composite declined 1%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.61%.
