Shakira has opened up on her ‘difficult’ split from Gerard Piqué, three years after their separation.

The Hips Don’t Lie songstress, 48, announced that she was breaking up with the former Barcelona star, 38, in June 2022 amid rumours of him cheating after 11 years and two children together.

The estranged couple shares her sons Milan, 12, and Sasha, 10, with the ex professional soccer player.

In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, Shakira admitted music has been the main thing that has helped her overcome their separation.

While she believes her chances in love are ‘increasingly scarce’, Shakira remains focused on being a strong, single mother to her boys.

She said: ‘I’ve learned that my music has a therapeutic effect. I’ve been through a couple of difficult years, personally, you know, with the separation and all that, but music has been like the glue that has brought me back together.

‘Songs evolve, they live their own life… they evolve in people’s lives. They become the soundtrack for many people, including myself. I remember chapters of my life through my own music and where I was at then emotionally and mentally.

‘I am in charge of these two children, these two babies who depend so much on me and I am a single mother, I don’t have a husband or a housewife to help me with anything.’

Shakira and Piqué met in 2010 on the set of the songstress’ Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)’ music video.

They took their relationship public in May 2011 and welcomed son Milan in 2013 and Sasha in 2015.

In the wake of his split with the South American singer, Piqué began a romance with Clara Chia Marti.

Shakira was confirmed to be dating Emily In Paris star Lucien Laviscount, after ‘falling for him on the set of their VERY steamy music video’.

At the 2025 Grammy Awards on Sunday, Shakira celebrated winning Best Latin Pop Album for her latest body of work ‘Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran’.

After the superstar was presented the award by Jennifer Lopez, she turned to hug her adorable sons.

Before the four-time Grammy winner hit the stage for a sizzling performance, she also spoke about transforming all the ‘pain and anger’ from her break-up into her new album.

‘Wow. This is incredible. Thank you so much,’ Shakira said, as she accepted her award. ‘I want to dedicate this award to all my immigrant brothers and sisters in this country. You are loved. You are worth it. I will always fight with you.’

She went on to reference her 2009 song, She Wolf, telling the audience: ‘To all of those women who worked really hard every day to provide for their families, you are the true She Wolves. So this is for you too.’

Shakira then thanked her adorable kids, who were both rocking matching silver suits for the evening.

‘I want to share this award with my kids. They are here with me. I’m so proud of you guys, of your kind hearts. Thank you so much for supporting me the way you do. I love you. Thank you.’

Before saying her name, Ben Affleck’s ex-wife triumphantly called out ‘Las mujeres ya no lloran, las mujeres facturan,’ meaning ‘Women no longer cry, women make money.’

The song gained massive popularity as it followed Shakira’s very public and emotional separation from Piqué.
