The Congress slammed BJP MP from Mandi, actress Kangana Ranaut, after former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and BJP leader Jairam Thakur’s recent remarks on her silence amid the devastating monsoon in the city.

The row erupted after Thakur, while responding to a question on why Kangana had not commented on the situation in Mandi while she posted about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Ghana visit, said, “I do not know, and I do not wish to comment on it. We are here to live and die for those who care; I do not wish to comment on those who do not care.”

Sharing a video of Thakur’s remarks, the Congress wrote on X, “MP Kangana Ranaut does not care about the people of Mandi. These are not our words, but those of former Himachal Chief Minister and BJP leader Jairam Thakur.”

“Due to a cloudburst in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, people are grappling with a severe tragedy, but Mandi’s MP Kangana Ranaut is nowhere to be seen.”

Mandi is currently experiencing heavy rainfall, which has disrupted the normal lives of the residents. At least 14 people have been killed and over 30 are missing in the Mandi cloudburst and flood-related incidents since Monday. A red alert has been issued in the state till July 7.

More than 150 houses, 106 cattle sheds, 31 vehicles, 14 bridges and several roads were damaged in the calamities, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). At least 37 deaths have been reported across Himachal Pradesh, along with Rs 400 crore of property damaged.

Kangana Ranaut Expresses Grief

Meanwhile, Ranaut on Friday expressed grief over the massive devastation caused by floods in her home state of Himachal Pradesh.

“It is heartbreaking to see massive flood devastation in Himachal almost every year now. I tried reaching flood-affected areas in Seraj and other areas in Mandi, but advised by respected leader of opposition Shri @jairamthakurbjp ji to wait untill the connectivity and reach to the affected areas are restored. Red alert is issued by Mandi DC today as well. Awaiting authorities’ approval on the same, will be there soonest possible. Thanks,” she wrote.

Her statement came after Jairam Thakur urged the government to take up the relief, rescue and restoration work on a war footing as the Mandi district suffered unprecedented loss of life and property in the devastating cloudbursts and flash floods on Monday.

He inspected Kukla Gram Panchayat in Seraj constituency on Wednesday, where heavy rains and a cloudburst had washed away several houses and roads.
