Amla (Indian gooseberry), a fruit commonly consumed during winter, is often referred as a superfood. Its rich vitamin C content boosts immunity, while numerous other nutrients offer various health benefits. People enjoy Amla in various forms like pickle, murabba, juice, and chutney, but have you considered eating it raw?

Used for centuries to maintain healthy hair and skin, Amla’s sour and slightly astringent taste often deters people from consuming it raw. However, ayurveda highly recommends eating raw Amla with salt.

Ayurveda expert Dr Nambi Namboodiri, through his Instagram account (@Dr.Nambi_Ayurveda), recently shared valuable insights about best ways to consume Amla. He advises consuming Amla raw with salt, as this balances the fruit’s sourness and astringency. This combination makes it a more complete food, as Ayurveda identifies six different juices in Amla, and salt helps harmonise them.

How to Eat Amla?

Dr Nambi recommends consuming one small-sized desi Amla daily and avoiding large-sized hybrid varieties. According to ayurveda, consuming Amla with salt is particularly beneficial.

This fruit possesses two vital qualities: Dhartri (nurturing and protective, like a mother) and Rasayani (nourishing and providing complete nutrition). Regular Amla consumption provides a wealth of nutrients and helps prevent various illnesses.

Amla is packed with nutrients and antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, fibre, iron, phosphorus, calcium, antioxidants, phytonutrients, and carbohydrates. You can store 365 Amlas in a container, add salt to taste, and consume one daily for optimal benefits.

He also advises against preparing Amla with excess oil, chilli, or masala. The rawer and plain it is consumed, the more benefits it offers.
