In only his second Test as India captain, Shubman Gill entered his name in the history books by becoming the first India captain to win a Test match at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Under Gill’s leadership, India bowled out England for 271 runs in their second innings of the second Test in reply to the 608-run target to secure a memorable win by 336 runs.
In fact, Gill is the first captain from Asia (India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Afghanistan) to win a Test match in Birmingham.
Gill led India from the front with the bat by top-scoring in both innings. He came out to bat at No. 4 in the first innings and, with the help of 30 fours and 3 sixes, scored 269 runs from 387 balls. In India’s second innings as well, Gill came out to bat at No. 4 on Saturday (July 5) and scored 161 runs from 162 balls with the help of 13 fours and 8 sixes.
He was ably supported by Ravindra Jadeja, who scored half-centuries in both innings.
A total of eight players—Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Ajit Wadekar, Srinivas Venkataraghavan, Kapil Dev, Mohammad Azharuddin, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah—led India in a Test match against England at Edgbaston before Gill, but no one could manage to secure a win.
In fact, apart from Kapil in July 1986, the remaining seven ended up on a losing side.
