According to a report in the Indian Express on Monday, Shubman will turn up for Punjab in the team’s upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka.
Star Indian batter Shubman Gill is likely to play for Punjab in the team’s upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka. Punjab will face Karnataka in the sixth Elite Group C match of the ongoing 2024-25 season from January 23 to 26. According to a report in Indian Express on Monday, the 25-year-old right-handed batter from Fazilka, who has 4481 runs to his name in 60 first-class matches played so far, “will turn up to play for Punjab against Karnataka.”
Gill was horribly out of form in the five-match Test series against Australia, which India lost with a scoreline of 1-3. The right-handed batter, who is expected to be part of India’s Champions Trophy squad, missed the first Test due to a finger injury but was only able to score 31, 28, and 1 run in the next two matches.
He was dropped from the playing XI of the Boxing Day Test due to tactical reasons but made a comeback in the next match, which was played at Sydney Cricket Ground. In the fifth and final match of the tour, Gill batted at No. 3 for the Jasprit Bumrah-led side and scored 20 and 13 runs. He looked ordinary throughout the series, and more than his batting, it was his temperament that was questioned in Australia.
Gill, who is seen as the next big thing in Indian cricket, is yet to make a big name for himself in the five-day format of the game.
Apart from Gill, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma could play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. According to an Indian Express report, Rohit has informed the Mumbai team management that he will be turning up for the practice session for the Ranji Trophy on Tuesday morning at the Wankhede Stadium.
According to an MCA source, Sharma hasn’t given his availability yet and is still mulling whether to play the Ranji Trophy league game or not. “He will be coming for practice sessions with the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team, and it is still not decided whether he will be playing the next Ranji Trophy game against J&K. He will inform the MCA in due course,” an MCA source said.
