Gill, who is leading Punjab in the ongoing match against Karnataka at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, has hammered 14 fours and 3 sixes so far.
Star India batter Shubman Gill on Saturday (January 25) scored a century for Punjab in the ongoing Ranji Trophy Elite Group C match against Karnataka. Gill opened for Punjab in the second innings of the match currently underway at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, and with the help of 14 fours and 3 sixes, crossed the triple-figure mark in 159 balls.
Gill is the only Punjab batter who has managed to score runs in the ongoing match against Karnataka, which posted a total of 475 runs in the first innings.
Punjab, after being invited to bat first on Thursday, was bowled out for just 55 runs in 29 overs of the first innings despite Gill’s comeback. The star right-handed batter, who played three Test matches in the recently concluded series against Australia, was only able to score 4 runs from eight balls in the first innings.
But despite Gill’s century, Punjab is staring at a big defeat against the Karnataka team, which includes the likes of Mayank Agarwal, Devdutt Padikkal, and Prasidh Krishna. Krishna was part of India’s playing XI in the fifth Test against Australia, which was played from January 3 to 5 at Sydney Cricket Ground, whereas Padikkal played in the series opener at Optus Stadium.
After returning from Australia, Padikkal and Krishna played in the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well and helped Karnataka win the title by getting the better of Vidarbha in the summit clash.
Padikkal scored 102 runs against Baroda in the quarterfinal match of the Vijay Hazare and 86 in the semifinal against Haryana at Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. The left-handed batter was, however, unable to do much with the bat in the summit clash and scored only 8 runs.
On the other hand, Krishna finished with figures of 3/84 in the VHT final. In the title decider, he accounted for the dismissal of Karun Nair, who was in red-hot form.
