With only six months left on his current contract, Harry Maguire has shared an update on his future at Manchester United. The centre-back seems to have found his rhythm under the new boss Ruben Amorim. His performance was good in the recent Manchester derby where United pulled off a stunning comeback to secure a 2-1 victory. After the match, Maguire hinted that he might stay at United, with the club having an option to extend his contract by another year. Both parties have already held talks to discuss a potential deal.

When asked about his future, Maguire said, “Listen, I haven’t thought about it. I’ve still got this year to go, with an option in their hands. But, yeah, talks are ongoing and all the signs are positive at the moment. The chat that I’m having is really positive,” as per The Mirror.

If Manchester United offer the England defender a contract extension, it will be a dramatic turnaround of fortunes for him. Not too long ago, Maguire struggled to find a place in the first team under the previous manager, Erik Ten Hag. But his form has no doubt improved since Amorim took over.

Maguire was heavily linked with a move away from Manchester several times over the last two summer transfer windows. In 2023, he came quite close to joining another Premier League side West Ham United but the deal never materialised.

Everything seems to have changed now. The former United captain has been one of the first-choice centre-backs for Amorim this season. The United boss was quite happy to see his strength and determination in the recent away game against City.

“Maguire is perfect when you play with the three defenders. I think in the middle, he is perfect. Then the way that the striker that they have with the long balls, you need to be really strong and so was perfect for him. Not just Harry, all the guys, defend well. They were focused and that is the key to playing better. I think he did a great job,” Amorim said, praising Maguire and his fellow defenders.

Manchester United are 13th in the Premier League table, having collected 22 points from 16 matches. The Red Devils will next face Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup on December 20.
