Temba Bavuma was batting on 2 runs when a ball bowled by Mitchell Starc kissed the edge of his bat and travelled straight to the first slip, where Steve Smith was fielding. But the legendary cricketer failed to complete the catch and, in the process, injured himself.

The ICC’s official Instagram handle shared the video of Smith dropping Bavuma’s catch and giving him a lifeline in the second innings.

Bavuma, who came out to bat at No. 4 for the Proteas in the second innings on Friday afternoon, is South Africa’s leading run getter in WTC history.

He broke former captain Dean Elgar’s record of 1935 runs in the last over before the tea break. Bavuma needed 10 runs in the 2nd innings to go past Elgar’s tally.

SA need 282 runs to win

South Africa need to score 282 runs in the second innings of the ongoing match at the Home of Cricket to win the 2025 WTC final. The South African team bowled Australia out for 207 runs in the second innings on Friday morning. Fast bowler Mitchell Starc remained unbeaten on 58 runs from 136 balls for the Aussies in the second innings and added 59 runs for the 10th wicket with Josh Hazlewood (17).

For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada picked up four wickets in the 2nd innings after dismissing five Aussie batters in the first innings, and Lungi Ngidi accounted for the dismissal of three opposition batters.

In the second session of the third day’s play, South Africa scored 94 runs for the loss of two wickets. Starc helped Australia get off to a flying start by removing Ryan Rickelton on the first ball of the third over, but Aiden Makram joined hands with No. 3 batter Wiaan Mulder to add 61 runs for the second wicket. Mulder was looking in good touch, but Starc bowled a super delivery on the fourth ball of the 18th over to get rid of him.

Mulder was caught by Marnus Labuschagne after making 27 runs from 50 balls. During his stay at the crease, he hammered five fours.
