The women of Sakhi Mandal, based in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, have transformed their lives through determination and skill. These women, all trained in sewing, take time out from their household chores to gather and work together. Their primary focus is stitching bags and special nets used in lac cultivation, which are supplied across Jharkhand.
A Boost to Women’s Economic Independence
Today, these women are financially independent and confidently supporting their families. Seema, a member of the group, shared her story. “My husband does seasonal tile work. Sometimes he gets jobs, sometimes he doesn’t. Earlier, I would be scolded for asking just Rs 100. But now, I earn Rs 15,000 a month and can manage our household expenses without stress,” she said.
Creating Unique Nets for Lac Farming
Pushpa, another member, explains, “We make nets used in lac cultivation. These are essential in Jharkhand and nearby states, and we’re the only ones who produce them here. There’s demand in every district of Jharkhand, and in neighbouring states like Odisha, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh.”
She recalls their journey, “Earlier, we were just housewives with no income. One day, Shakti, a local involved in lac farming, told us there was a big need for these nets, but no one was making them. So, we decided to step in. We began by setting aside 3 to 4 hours a day, sitting with sewing machines and working with full dedication.”
Shakti, who helped guide the women, proudly says, “These women are shaping their own destiny through sewing. They once struggled to find Rs 200, and now they can pay for groceries and children’s school fees with ease. Any woman interested in joining is welcome, and for more information, they can contact 9102962005.”
This initiative not only provides income but also builds confidence and community among the women, showing how skill and solidarity can change lives.
