Poornima Rao, the mother of Suchir Balaji, claimed that her son’s death was not suicide and she said that there have been major lapses in the investigation.
Suchir Balaji worked on OpenAI’s several key projects, including WebGPT and GPT-4’s pretraining.
The mother of Suchir Balaji, a 26-year-old former OpenAI researcher who was found dead after accusing the company of violating copyright laws, made fresh allegations in an interview with Tucker Carlson. Poornima Rao, the mother of Suchir Balaji, claimed that her son’s death was not suicide and she said that there have been major lapses in the investigation.
When asked on whether Suchir Balaji could have committed suicide, his mother said, “He celebrated his birthday a day before he died. What more do we need to give on account that he was in a happy mood?” He also accepted a birthday gift from his father on the day of this death, she shared.

She said, “How I knew that my son was dead was by looking at the white van.” The police did not inform her and kept making excuses, she said, adding, “It took them 14 minutes to determine the cause of death and tell me that it was a suicide. In the evening, they returned the keys to me and told me that I could pick up the body tomorrow.”
She said, “My son had documents against OpenAI. They attacked him and killed him.”
Some packages were also missing, she said, adding, “Everybody is suppressed, nobody is ready to come up and tell the truth. Even the attorneys have been made to tell that it is a suicide.”
Tesla CEO Elon Musk reposted the interview on X (formerly Twitter) as he said that the allegations were “extremely concerning”.
