Surdas Jayanti 2025: History and Significance
Famous for his devotional compositions devoted to the worship of Lord Krishna, Saint Surdas was a great poet and musician.
Born blind in the village of Sihi (some people think he was born in Runkata village), Surdas had to deal with neglect from his family from the moment of his birth. His mother’s name was Jamunadas, and his father was Ramdas. Consequently, at the age of six, he abandoned his family and became deeply engrossed in the devotion of Lord Krishna. His love for Krishna was reflected in his songs, as he was a Vaishnava follower of the god.
The poet became so well-known that he even became a patron of Akbar, the Mughal Emperor. The final years of his life were spent in the Braj area. Finally, historians think that Surdas wrote hundreds of his poems and collected them in a book called Sursagar. But currently, there are only roughly 8,000 of them. His works that praise Lord Krishna include Sur Saravali and Sahitya Lahari.
The day is observed to honour the amazing poet and saint for his outstanding contribution to religious poetry.
