Suryakumar Yadav became the first Mumbai Indians (MI) player to score 600 runs in multiple IPL seasons while batting against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Monday (May 26).
He previously went past that mark in IPL 2023 with 605 runs. On Monday, he did that with a Surya Supla special six against Kyle Jamieson, flicking a straight good-length delivery over deep square leg with utmost ease. Three balls and two boundaries later, Suryakumar went past the 25-run mark for the 14th consecutive time — a new world record in T20s.
At the time of writing, he had also gone past the 605-run mark, making this his best-ever season in the IPL. The middle-order batter has been in exceptional form all season, with his consistency a major factor behind MI’s recovery from their early troubles in the league to a comfortable top-four finish.
In this match, the five-time champions are aiming for a win that will secure them a top-two spot.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Suryakumar and Hardik Pandya guided MI to 184/7.
Although opener Ryan Rickelton (27 off 20 balls) played some elegant shots, the Mumbai Indians managed to score 52 for one in the powerplay. Rohit Sharma (24 off 21 balls) started slowly but picked up momentum with a straight hit over mid-off against Marco Jansen. Playing his final game of the season for Punjab Kings, Jansen induced a mishit from Rickelton, resulting in the opener being caught at mid-on in the sixth over.
Without Yuzvendra Chahal, left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar stepped up in the middle overs, taking the key wicket of Rohit, who was brilliantly caught by Nehal Wadhera at long-on. At 106 for four in the 13th over, the Punjab Kings had control of the match. Hardik Pandya was almost dismissed on the first legal ball he faced, but Vijaykumar Vyshak missed a straightforward return catch.
The momentum shifted in the Mumbai Indians’ favor during the penultimate over, where Vyshak conceded 23 runs. Suryakumar and Naman Dhir (20 off 12 balls) delivered crucial hits in the death overs. The final over by Arshdeep Singh was exactly what the Punjab Kings needed to close the innings, as the left-arm pacer took two wickets and gave away just three runs.
