In his honour, Swaminarayan Jayanti is celebrated each year. This year, the day will be observed on April 6 which also marks Ram Navami.

Swaminarayan Jayanti 2025: History

Swaminarayan, born as Ghanshyam Pande in Chhapaiya, Uttar Pradesh, in 1781, began a pilgrimage across India at the age of 11. During this seven-year journey, he adopted the name Nilkanth Varni and focused on various welfare activities. After travelling for nearly nine years, he settled in the state of Gujarat around 1799.

In 1800, he joined the Uddhav Sampradaya under Swami Ramanand who gave him the name Sahajanand Swami. In 1802, before passing away, Swami Ramanand appointed Sahajanand Swami as the leader of the Uddhav Sampradaya. Fifteen days later, Sahajanand Swami introduced the Swaminarayan Mantra at a gathering. From then on, he was known as Swaminarayan and the Uddhav Sampradaya became the Swaminarayan Sampradaya.

The Swaminarayan Mantra had a powerful impact on devotees who believed it could lead to deep meditation or samadhi, a state of spiritual enlightenment. They began worshipping Swaminarayan as a divine figure.

Swaminarayan passed away on June 1, 1830, and was cremated in Gadhada, Gujarat. His life and teachings left a lasting legacy through the Swaminarayan Sampradaya.

Swaminarayan Jayanti 2025: Interesting Facts

  1. Swaminarayan’s birth coincides with Ram Navami, the festival that marks the birth of Lord Rama, incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
  2. Swaminarayan’s followers included not just Hindus but also Muslims and Zoroastrians.
  3. He built six temples and appointed 500 paramhansas to spread his teachings.
  4. In 1826, Swaminarayan wrote the Shikshapatri, a book of social principles.
  5. He opened charity houses to help the poor. The spiritual leader also arranged food and water for people during droughts.
  6. It is believed that Swaminarayan stopped practices like sati where widows were forced or chose to end their lives. He also worked to end female infanticide and encouraged the education of women.
  7. He opposed animal sacrifice in yagnas and promoted non-violence.
  8. Swaminarayan was given land by the British government in Ahmedabad to build a temple.
  9. He gave a copy of the Shikshapatri to Sir John Malcolm, the Governor of Bombay. This copy is kept in the Bodleian Library in Oxford, UK.
  10. It is believed that Swaminarayan mastered all Hindu scriptures such as the Vedas, Shastras, Puranas, Upanishads, Mahabharata and Ramayana by the age of seven.

Many followers observe a strict fast where they don’t even drink water throughout the day. They spend their day by chanting the Swaminarayan Mantra and remembering his teachings.
