Tahawwur Rana, the terrorist involved in plotting the Mumbai attacks, is being extradited to India from the United States. This move follows the US’s approval of his extradition, setting the process in motion.
Last year, Rana had appealed to a US court to avoid extradition, citing his multiple serious health conditions. He claimed to suffer from numerous ailments, including recurring heart attacks, Parkinson’s disease, cognitive decline, and kidney disease, presenting several documents as evidence.
Dr. Atampreet Singh, Director of the Neurology Department at Fortis Hospital in Greater Noida, explained that Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition caused by a deficiency of dopamine in the brain.
This affects the part of the brain responsible for controlling body movements, leading to tremors, loss of balance, slowed walking speed, and difficulties in speech.
Individuals over the age of 50-60 are at higher risk, with men more prone than women. The weakening of dopamine-producing brain cells, along with oxidative stress, genetic factors, and neuroinflammation, increases the risk with age.
While there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, medications can slow its progression and provide relief to about 80% of patients. In cases where medication becomes less effective, surgical treatments may be necessary. Diagnosis involves analysing symptoms, as there is no definitive test for Parkinson’s.
Although there is currently no way to completely prevent the disease, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, good diet, regular exercise, and limited alcohol consumption can reduce the risk. Research is ongoing for a potential vaccine, which may be available in the coming years.
Parkinson’s disease, though not immediately fatal, progressively impairs bodily movement and can make life increasingly difficult. Without proper treatment and care, complications can become life-threatening.
Dr. Atampreet Singh also addressed cognitive decline, which involves a gradual loss of mental abilities such as memory, decision-making, and concentration. While some decline is normal with age, severe deterioration can signal neurological conditions like dementia or Alzheimer’s.
Early signs include forgetting things, struggling with words, difficulty making decisions, and repetitive questioning. Timely intervention is crucial to prevent the condition from worsening.
