The move marks Phase II of the facility’s development and aligns with Apple’s increasing focus on India as a key manufacturing hub.
The expansion comes in the wake of Apple CEO Tim Cook’s comments highlighting India’s growing role in the company’s global supply chain.
Tata Electronics is preparing to significantly expand its iPhone enclosure manufacturing capacity at its Hosur facility in Tamil Nadu, The Economic Times has reported. The move marks Phase II of the facility’s development and aligns with Apple’s increasing focus on India as a key manufacturing hub.
“Tata Electronics is looking to double its existing capacity of around 50,000 enclosures,” the report quoted a source as saying. The expansion is expected to be completed ahead of Apple’s annual product launches, typically held in September.
The Hosur plant had reached a capacity of 50,000 enclosures before a fire in September last year temporarily disrupted operations and paused expansion. “It took some time for them to get back on track after the fire,” said another source. “But, the capacity is at pre-fire levels now.”
Apple’s Shift Toward India
The expansion comes in the wake of Apple CEO Tim Cook’s comments highlighting India’s growing role in the company’s global supply chain. “For the June quarter, we do expect the majority of iPhones sold in the US will have India as their country of origin,” Cook said during Apple’s Q1 earnings call on May 1.
He also noted that Vietnam would be the country of origin for most iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, and AirPods sold in the US, indicating Apple’s ongoing efforts to reduce dependence on China amid geopolitical tensions and trade uncertainty.
Tata’s Increasing Role in Apple’s Supply Chain
Tata Electronics has been expanding its presence in Apple’s supplier network. In early 2025, it acquired a 60 per cent controlling stake in Pegatron Technology India (PTI), following its takeover of Wistron’s India operations in Narsapura, Karnataka, in March 2024. These acquisitions signal Tata’s ambition to become a major player in Apple’s global value chain.
Broader Supplier Movement
Tata’s growth in India mirrors a broader shift among Apple suppliers. Foxconn, Apple’s largest contract manufacturer, is also increasing its investment in the country. The Taiwanese company is building a large new factory in Bengaluru and has launched a facility in Hyderabad focused on AirPods production, further diversifying its India operations.
Together, these developments underscore Apple’s strategic effort to deepen its manufacturing base in India and build a more resilient, de-risked supply chain.
