Amid rising concerns regarding infiltration, tensions erupted between the Border Security Forces (BSF) and Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) over the installation of barbed wire fencing on the India-Bangladesh border in Malda.
According to reports, the Public Works Department and the BSF were working on erecting barbed wire fences in the Shukdevpur area to prevent the influx of people from the border areas.
This incident came to light on Tuesday. It has been learnt that the situation became tense after the BSF started erecting the barbed wire fence along the India-Bangladesh border to increase security. But the BGB objected to the fencing. The work was then temporarily stopped.
Following this, the locals also gathered on both sides of the border and started raising slogans. However, the situation was later brought in control by the forces.
According to Bengali news site, Sambad Pratidin, it was reported that the BGB alleged that the area where the fencing work was being done was within Bangladesh territory.
On Tuesday morning, a flag meeting was held between the BSF and BGB over the situation where BSF showed a map and said that the area was part of Indian territory. Finally, BGB went back. The work of erecting a barbed wire fence has started again this morning.
Malda District Magistrate Nitin Singhania informed that the situation is normal now and the BSF is keeping a watch on the border area. On the other hand, the district police is also monitoring the situation. Police have been deployed in the area.
