Tesla Starts Hiring In India: Tesla Inc., a global leader in renewable energy and electric vehicles, which has had a limited presence in India, announced plans on Monday to begin hiring in the country. The company is looking to fill 13 roles, including both customer-facing and back-end positions, as reflected in job postings recently uploaded to its LinkedIn page.
This move follows a meeting between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter’s visit to the United States.

Tesla-India Relationship Tesla’s engagement with India has been sporadic over the years, largely due to concerns over high import duties. However, India recently reduced the basic customs duty on high-end cars priced above $40,000 from 110% to 70%. This change, along with India’s push to decarbonize its economy and achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, makes the country an increasingly attractive market for electric vehicles.
India is the world’s third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, yet the growing middle class and interest in sustainable solutions make it a key market for Tesla’s EVs. Tesla has long been seeking to lower import taxes as a condition for making large investments in India.
In 2022, Musk had planned to visit India and meet Prime Minister Modi, sparking speculation about Tesla’s future investments in the country, including a possible manufacturing facility. However, Musk postponed the visit to address urgent company issues, including workforce reductions and vehicle recalls in the U.S.
Tesla has consistently advocated for reduced import duties on EVs as a precursor to significant investment in India. In response, the Indian government in March introduced a lower import duty for EV manufacturers that commit to setting up local factories with investments of at least 41.5 billion rupees ($500 million).
