Tesla In India: Amid ongoing discussions around electric vehicle (EV) import duties, Tesla Inc., led by Elon Musk, has taken a significant step towards strengthening its presence in India by leasing office space near Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Economic Times reported. According to sources quoted by ET, the US-based EV giant has set up a 30-seater office in Phoenix Market City, Kurla—a major commercial hub close to BKC.
Tesla has leased the space through its India arm, Tesla India Motor & Energy, at a monthly rent of Rs 3 lakh. The lease, signed earlier this month with coworking operator EFC, comes with a one-year term and a three-month lock-in period, offering the company operational flexibility as it continues to refine its India strategy.
The new office is expected to support early-stage functions such as regulatory coordination, vendor engagement, local hiring, and backend operations for its anticipated EV rollout in the country.
This move follows Tesla’s landmark deal to secure its first India showroom in BKC, which set a national record with lease rentals of Rs 881 per sq ft per month. The new office space also includes two dedicated car parking slots.
Tesla’s interest in India dates back several years, but plans were delayed due to high import tariffs and infrastructure challenges. However, momentum picked up significantly after Elon Musk met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter’s US visit in 2024, with India now seen as a key market in Tesla’s global expansion.
