With reports swirling about Tesla’s imminent entry into India, homegrown electric vehicle (EV) giants Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra are gearing up to take on Elon Musk’s company with strategic moves and customer-centric offerings.
Tata Motors Rolls Out Exclusive Perks for New & Existing EV Owners
As India’s leading EV manufacturer, Tata Motors has announced special benefits for its customers after achieving a significant milestone—crossing 2 lakh EV sales. To mark this achievement, the company has introduced limited-period offers available for the next 45 days.
Currently, Tata Motors offers five electric models in India—Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, and Curvv EV, with prices starting at Rs 7.99 lakh. The company remains the top-selling EV brand, with 61,496 units sold in 2024, slightly higher than 60,100 in 2023. However, its market share has declined from 73% to 62%.
At the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, Tata Motors showcased its upcoming Harrier EV and the iconic Sierra EV, both set to launch in all-electric versions.
Limited-Time Offers & Loyalty Rewards For Tata Motors Customers
To reward existing and new customers, Tata Motors is offering:
–Exchange Bonus: Up to Rs 50,000
–Financing Benefits: 100% on-road funding with zero down payment
–Charging Perks: Free home charger installation (7.2 kW AC) & six months of free access to Tata Power’s charging network (for Nexon EV & Curvv EV buyers)
–Loyalty Rewards:
1) Rs 50,000 bonus for existing Tata EV owners upgrading to Nexon EV or Curvv EV
2) Rs 20,000 bonus for Tata ICE vehicle owners switching to an EV
With these incentives, Tata Motors aims to reinforce its leadership in India’s fast-growing EV market while encouraging more consumers to switch to electric mobility.
Anand Mahindra’s Strategy to Compete with Tesla in India
As Tesla prepares for its India debut, Mahindra & Mahindra Chairman Anand Mahindra remains confident in his company’s ability to compete. Drawing parallels to India’s economic liberalization in 1991, when foreign automakers like Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, and Daewoo entered the market, Mahindra emphasized that his company not only survived but thrived in a competitive landscape.
Responding to a query on social media platform X, Mahindra reiterated that Mahindra & Mahindra is prepared for Tesla’s challenge.
“We have not just survived, but we continue working like maniacs to remain relevant even a century from now. With your support, we will make it happen.”
Mahindra’s Latest EV Launches
As part of its Tesla counter-strategy, Mahindra recently launched its highly anticipated EVs, the XEV 9e and BE 6e, which have been well-received in the market.
Tesla’s India Plans: What to Expect
Tesla is reportedly set to debut in India in April 2024, with plans to import EVs from Germany, starting at Rs 21 lakh.
Additionally, Tesla has begun hiring for key positions in India, including Tesla Advisor, Inside Sales Advisor, and Consumer Engagement Manager. This hiring spree follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Elon Musk in Washington, signaling Tesla’s serious intent to enter the Indian market.
With Tata Motors’ aggressive incentives and Mahindra’s strategic approach, India’s EV space is set for an exciting battle as Tesla gears up for its long-awaited entry.
