Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh on Tuesday responded to a fan who made a long video requesting Hindi commentary panels across tournaments to improve their quality, pointing out how poems and old tales have become a feature, with analyses going out of the window.

Harbhajan, who is part of the commentary panel, besides Virender Sehwag, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa and Ambati Rayudu, assured fans that their feedback would be taken into account.

A cricket fan took to X on Tuesday, expressing his disappointment over the current state of Hindi commentary.

“To all our cricket broadcasters, the IPL is going on right now, and a few days ago, the Champions Trophy was going on. I humbly request you all to please improve your Hindi commentary,” the fan said.

“Earlier, when we used to watch Hindi commentary in our childhood, Maninder Singh, Arun Lal and Sushil Doshi used to do the commentary. So, we used to learn a lot about the game,” the fan said.

“The fielder has taken a fine leg, a square leg, a deep mid wicket. So, the bowler will bowl a short ball here,” the fan elaborated on how enriching Hindi commentary once was.

Harbhajan responded to the criticism with a small but professional reply: ‘Thanks for the input. We will work on it.’

The reply went viral, with several users agreeing that Hindi commentary has shifted away from in-depth cricket discussions.

After India’s victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in the Champions Trophy, a fan had labelled Hindi commentary as the ‘cringiest’. At that time too it was Harbhajan who had responded.

Harbhajan had slammed the fan back then, accusing the individual of disrespecting the language.

“Wah Angrej ki Aulaad . Shame on you, Apni भाषा bolne aur sun k fakr mehsoos hona chahiye,” Harbhajan tweeted last month.

The debate over Hindi commentaries has fuelled innumerable memes and discussions online.
