The English FA have charged Merseyside teams Liverpool, Everton, Reds manager Arne Slot and assistant coach Sipke Hulshoff in the aftermath of the Merseyside Derby which descended into chaos following the 2-2 Premier League draw between the sides on Thursday.

The cross-town rivals, who have traditionally harboured bitter emotions towards the other, had to settle for a point each as lowly Everton held the table-toppers Liverpool to a stalemate in the final Merseyside derby at the fabled Goodison Park, before the Toffees move to their new at Bramley-Moore Dock next year.

The Toffees grabbed a surprise lead in the 11th minute of the game as Beto put the hosts in front. However, they were pegged back five minutes later as Alexis Mac Allister produced a deft header to level proceedings. Liverpool star Mohamed Salah put his team ahead as he pounced on a chance at the far post in the 73rd minute of play. But, the drama was far from over as James Tarkowski sent the packed Goodison into a state of delirium with a belter of a goal in the eighth minute of added time.

A brawl broke out between players of either side following the final whistle and the man in the middle, Michael Oliver, was forced to show the red card to Abdoulaye Doucoure and Curtis Jones. Liverpool boss Slot and assistant Hulshoff were also brandished the red by the referee following an exchange of words after the final whistle.

“It is alleged that both clubs failed to ensure their players and/or technical area occupants did not behave in an improper and/or provocative way following the final whistle,” the FA said.

“The Liverpool manager allegedly acted in an improper manner and/or used insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour towards both the match referee and an assistant referee after the match had finished,” the statement continued.

Slot, who addressed the media the day after the fixture acknowledged that emotions got the better of him and added that he would have opted for a different approach if faced with the scenario again.

“The extra time that was five minutes and ended up being eight, happens a lot. And the emotions got the better of me… if I look back at it, I would love to do it differently,” he said.

All parties charged have until Wednesday to respond to the FA’s decision.
