A flight attendant has revealed the real reason passengers are always greeted with a friendly ‘Hello’ as they board the plane.

Flight attendant Rania or @itsmekikooooo on TikTok explained the reason behind the tradition in a viral video on the app. 

That warm greeting when you board isn’t just politeness – it’s a vital safety check cabin crew are trained to perform on every passenger, the flight attendant revealed in a resurfaced TikTok video.

Did you know your flight attendant greets you, not only out of politeness, but also to check whether you are too drunk or sick to fly,’ she explained in the video.

‘Did you know that?’ she captioned the video, adding that it’s ‘also to see who could help us in an emergency.’

An ex-flight attendant chimed in, commenting: ‘As an ex Flight Attendant, we always greet the customers to welcome them 1st & of course you pay attention to intoxication, obstinate behavior, etc’

Users shared their own experience upon entering the plan to board their flight.

‘Once I had to take a breathalyzer because I said to the really pretty flight attendant “good night” when she said hello. I was sober’

Another passenger had a less fortunate encounter.

The 31-year-old has now divulged yet more information, including how to keep your belongings safe – and who really owns the space above your seat.

‘Flying is often seen as a safe and organized experience, but the reality is that there are many things passengers don’t know,’ the ex-flight attendant said.

‘Things that can turn a flight into an uncomfortable or even dangerous situation.

‘From the chaos of carry-on luggage to in-flight thefts, there are hidden truths airlines don’t tell you. And by the time you find out, it might be too late.’

The most shocking secret is that theft happens on airplanes too.

Barbara said: ‘Most passengers never expect it, because we assume we are safe once on board.

‘But while you’re sleeping or distracted, someone could be rummaging through the overhead bins, stealing from suitcases without anyone noticing.

Barbara also notes that the overhead space above your seat is not actually yours.

Some may not know that carry-on bags don’t have assigned spots on the plane, which means sometimes you’ll have to stow yours much farther back, giving fliers even more reason to remain vigilant about their surroundings.
