When Arne Slot succeeded Jurgen Klopp to become the Liverpool boss, many doubted if the Dutch manager would be able to replicate the success of his predecessor. One of them was Gary Neville, who predicted that Slot would struggle in his debut campaign at Anfield.
Before the start of the season, the Manchester United legend also opined that Liverpool might not emerge as a top contender for the Premier League title.
Barely half of the season has passed, with Liverpool having already impressed Neville with their unmatched dominance across all competition.
Neville was all praises for Liverpool after they thrashed Manchester City in the last league fixture. Having played 13 matches, Slot’s men remain at the top of the Premier League table with 34 points. They are currently nine points ahead of the second-placed Arsenal.
“It’s brilliant what Arne Slot’s done and it gets really serious. It’s gone from being a honeymoon period to a great start in a minute. They are real expectations very, very strong favourites,” Neville said, referring toLiverpool’s red-hot form.
“There’s still four or five months to go.I’m not saying Liverpool are going to win the league. I still think there’s long way to go. But there is no doubt now there’ll be an expectation,” he added.
His latest prediction has attracted a cheeky response from Slot. The Liverpool boss addressed the topic during a recent press conference where he also opened up about their preparation for the upcoming away game against Newcastle United. He also referred to what Neville said about their title prospects ahead of the season.
“Is that the first one? He had a different opinion of us at the start of the season, which probably most people had about us, except our fans. We don’t look at it at this moment like this. We know we have a difficult week coming up again,” Slot said, as per the Mirror.
About the next assignments, the 46-year-old said, “As we thought, Real Madrid and Man City were difficult to face. I think it’s even harder to go to Newcastle away as well. We’re not even halfway through the season yet, but it’s good position to be in. That’s true. I wasn’t aware that six of the next nine are away, but now you tell me,it makes it even more difficult, but we’re ready for it.”
Not only in the English circuit, but Liverpool have also been exceptional in the Champions League, where they are yet to drop any point after five matches. Apart from Real Madrid, the Premier League side has overcome powerhouses like AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen in the European competition.
