The police said that a three-page note was found in the wallet of the gunman Shane Tamura, who opened fire in a Midtown Manhattan office tower, killing four people. The note referred to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a brain disease that has afflicted people who play contact sports. The disease can only be definitively diagnosed after death. The note also referred to Terry Long, the former Pittsburgh Steelers player who was diagnosed with CTE after downing antifreeze to kill himself 20 years ago.
