It’s hardly possible to go a day without the internet today, be it for work or pleasure. Almost everyone has a smartphone in their hands. Often, when mobile data runs out in a public place, users connect their phones to public Wi-Fi networks. Using public Wi-Fi is considered a good way to save your own data. But have you ever thought that using public Wi-Fi can put you in danger?

In fact, the central government has issued a warning to all citizens, advising them not to conduct financial transactions or sensitive activities using public Wi-Fi networks. The government said that free public Wi-Fi at airports, coffee shops, and other public places may seem convenient, but it can be very risky for your private and financial information. Many of these public Wi-Fi networks are not properly secured, making them easy targets for hackers and scammers.

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), an agency working under the Ministry of Electronics and IT, has issued this new reminder. In the advisory, citizens have been warned against engaging in sensitive activities such as banking or online shopping on public Wi-Fi networks.

Lack Of security In Public Wi-Fi

CERT-In stated that cybercriminals can easily hack unsecured connections on public Wi-Fi, which can lead to data theft and financial loss for users. The government has advised people to avoid making transactions or entering personal information when connected to such networks.

Safety Tips

As part of its awareness campaign, CERT-In has also shared some important safety tips. It advised citizens never to click on links or attachments from unknown sources, to use long and strong passwords for all online accounts, and to regularly back up important files on an external drive. The government agency said that if proper precautions are not taken, even simple activities like checking email or logging into social media accounts on public Wi-Fi can be risky.
