The city of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh is renowned for its lock industry and educational institutions. The people of Aligarh possess a diverse range of talents, with some individuals possessing skills that have captivated the attention of prominent figures from the world of cricket and cinema. Among these talented individuals is Mohammad Imran, a tailor by profession.
Imran operates a shop named A.M. Darzi, located in the Center Point area of the city. He has been running this establishment in Aligarh for the past seven years. Imran’s journey into the world of tailoring began in his childhood, where he honed his skills by observing his father at work.
Mohammad Imran’s tailoring expertise has garnered him a loyal clientele that includes renowned cricketers such as Harbhajan Singh and Suresh Raina, alongside Bollywood stars. These esteemed individuals prefer to have their clothes stitched exclusively by Imran. His reputation for excellence has led to invitations to travel to various locations, including Mumbai and Delhi, to cater to his discerning clientele.
Reflecting on his journey, Imran shares, “I embarked on my tailoring career in Aligarh seven years ago under the banner of A.M. Darzi. However, my passion for sewing was ignited during my childhood, where I had the privilege of learning the craft under my father’s guidance.”
Over the years, Imran has had the opportunity to create garments for a constellation of celebrities, including Harbhajan Singh, Sunil Gavaskar, Suresh Raina, Kapil Dev, and Rishabh Pant. His clientele extends beyond the borders of India, with notable international figures such as Ricky Ponting and several players from the ICC World Cup having donned his creations.
Recounting his experiences, Imran reveals, “There were instances when I received calls even before the commencement of cricket matches. After an initial trial of their suits, I would then proceed to deliver the final product. I have even gone to the extent of taking measurements of players directly on the field.”
He fondly adds, “I have had the pleasure of spending a significant amount of time with cricket players. Recently, in addition to my Aligarh establishment, I have also opened a branch in Delhi. I have had the honour of crafting clothes for almost all the players. Those who appreciate well-fitted attire have a particular fondness for our handmade garments.”
Mohammad Imran explains that appointments and communication with celebrities regarding clothing are typically handled over the phone. Once the details are finalised, he travels to their location, often a hotel, to take their measurements.
Imran discloses that all his travel and accommodation expenses are borne by the clients who engage his services. This includes airfare, car rentals, and hotel stays. Elaborating on his pricing, Imran states, “The starting price for a garment is Rs 10,000. In my Delhi shop, the prices begin at Rs 20,000. I cater to a wide range of sartorial preferences, from sherwanis and jackets to kurtas, suits, and any other design a client may desire. I also create suits for clients internationally. While I send the finished garments from here, I take their measurements via video call.”
