Adulteration in milk sold in the market has become common, posing a serious threat to our health. Chemicals like urea and starch are often added to milk, which can be harmful. With the proliferation of adulterated products in the market, identifying pure and genuine milk has become a challenge. However, one can easily check at home whether the milk delivered to your house is real or adulterated, using a few simple tips including Betadine liquid and turmeric powder.
Use Turmeric Powder or Betadine
According to Lalit Mohan Pandey, District Food Designated Officer of Bageshwar, Uttarakhand, Betadine, which is generally used for treating wounds, is effective in identifying adulterated milk as well.
To perform the test, take two spoons of milk and add two drops of Betadine to each. If the milk turns blue or chocolate in colour, it indicates the presence of starch. If there is no change and it remains yellow, the milk is likely starch-free. However, this test only detects starch adulteration.
To check for urea, use turmeric powder instead. Add a pinch of turmeric to the milk and observe it after some time. If the colour turns red or orange, it suggests urea adulteration. If the milk remains yellow, then it is free from urea.
