Many people often dream of living in a secluded place away from the hustle and bustle of cities, but in reality, living in such a place is not as easy as it seems. Living alone may offer temporary relief, but the loneliness that follows is something only the individual truly understands.
Recently, an American woman made headlines after revealing that she lived alone on an island during the Covid-19 pandemic. She didn’t have to pay a single penny in rent for the house she stayed in, but had no electricity for two months.
According to media reports, during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Desiree Heveroh was appointed as a lighthouse keeper at the East Brother Light Station in California. She was responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the station, as well as overseeing the island’s waste disposal system.
The lighthouse is located on the remote East Brother Island in San Rafael Bay. It was built in 1873 to help sailors navigate in the dark. Desiree shared that many years ago, while driving to Richmond with her daughter, she noticed a small house on the island. Over the following years, she became intrigued by the house and began researching who maintained it. Eventually, she found a website where she could apply to help restore the island.
Desiree became so fond of the work that she spent nearly 10 years doing various tasks related to the lighthouse. In 2020, she moved to the island to take full responsibility for its upkeep. During her time there, an electricity cable broke, leaving her without power for two months. The cable, which supplied electricity, was very expensive to repair, and the Coast Guard did not have the resources to fix it.
Despite the lack of electricity, Desiree found peace and relaxation in her solitary life on the island. In a recent interview with a YouTube channel, she shared the details of her unique experience.
