It seems as if the end of an era may be approaching the Allianz Arena, as Bayern Munich veteran midfielder Thomas Muller is reportedly set to part ways with the Bavarians at the end of the season.
Bayern Munich had handed Muller a one-year contract extension through to the end of the 2024-25 season, enabling him to break the all-time appearance record for the Bavarians in the current season.
But, now when the Bundesliga giants reportedly approached the veteran player with two contract extension offers, the 35-year-old reportedly did not agree.
Yet, it has also been reported that another reason behind the decision has to do with Bayern’s current financial constraints.
Muller is reportedly one of the top earners at Bayern Munich, with an annual salary of over €10 million (about $10.8 million).
But, according to German media outlet kicker, Bayern are now in need of cash flow to fund the salaries of stalwarts Joshua Kimmich, Manuel Neuer, and even Alphonso Davies reportedly, and so could be looking at offloading Muller, who has now become a bench player, to help them with their finances.
Müller, who has played 24 seasons and scored 150 Bundesliga goals for Bayern, ranks fourth on the all-time Champions League appearance list and is the only one amongst them to have played for just one club.
Muller will depart after having made the most appearances for Bayern Munich in the 125-year history of Bayern Munich, and after having won a remarkable 33 titles for the Bavarians during his tenure.
According to reports, Müller wouldn’t opt to play for another Bundesliga team, but would rather consider a move to the MLS, following in the footsteps of his former Germany teammate Marco Reus, who joined LA Galaxy last season after he left Borussia Dortmund, the club he spent 12 years at.
