Imagine a world map where happiness shines the brightest—where would you find the warmest smiles and the most content hearts? Happiness— it’s something we all chase, but where in the world are people actually finding it in abundance? Every year, the Gallup World Poll crunches the numbers, examining various aspects of life to determine which nations rank as the happiest on the planet. The results are compiled into the World Happiness Report and for 2025, we’ve got a fresh lineup in the top 10, though the reigning champion remains undefeated for the sixth consecutive year.
Measuring happiness isn’t an exact science, but the World Happiness Report does a solid job of quantifying it through a unique scoring system based on life evaluations. Survey participants rank their lives on a Cantril ladder scale, from zero (worst) to ten (best), with around 1,000 responses contributing to each country’s final score. The report then averages the responses over three years to smooth out any short-term fluctuations, explains BBC.
While some countries have climbed the ranks, others have slipped down. Unfortunately, Afghanistan remains at the bottom of the list as the world’s unhappiest country, scoring just 1.721. The UK holds the 20th spot with a score of 6.749, while the US lands in 23rd place at 6.725. But which country takes the happiness crown this year?
Let’s dive into the top 10:
10. Australia
Cracking the top 10 with a score of 7.057, Australia is officially one of the happiest places on Earth in 2025. Known for its stunning beaches, laid-back lifestyle, and thriving wildlife, it’s easy to see why Aussies are all smiles. Last year, this spot belonged to New Zealand, which has now slipped to 11th place.
9. Switzerland
Switzerland claims ninth place with a score of 7.060. Though it ranked as high as fourth in 2022, this alpine paradise has gradually slid down the list. Still, with its breathtaking mountains, world-famous chocolate and a reputation for stability, Switzerland remains a strong contender in the happiness race. The country also boasts four official languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh, reflecting its rich cultural diversity.
8. Luxembourg
With a score of 7.122, Luxembourg lands in eighth place. This tiny European nation, bordering Germany, Belgium and France, was ranked as high as sixth in 2022 but has since dropped a few spots. Despite its small size (just 2,586 km²), Luxembourg punches well above its weight, with a strong economy, high standard of living and picturesque landscapes.
7. Norway
Norway takes seventh place with a score of 7.302. The first of the Scandinavian nations to appear on this list, Norway is famous for its majestic fjords, the dazzling Northern Lights and an excellent quality of life. Whether you’re a nature lover or a city dweller, Norway’s mix of outdoor beauty and urban charm makes it a happy place to be.
6. Netherlands
The Netherlands secures the sixth spot with a score of 7.319. This country is known for its vibrant tulip fields, iconic windmills, and of course, a culture that embraces cycling like no other. The Netherlands is also home to major international institutions, such as the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, both based in The Hague.
5. Israel
Coming in at number five with a score of 7.344, Israel’s presence in the top 10 may come as a surprise to some. Despite facing complex geopolitical challenges, the country continues to rank high in life satisfaction. Its diverse culture, thriving tech industry, and a strong sense of community contribute to its high happiness rating.
4. Sweden
Sweden takes fourth place with a score of 7.395. A nation known for its deep forests, picturesque lakes and a seemingly endless supply of IKEA furniture, Sweden has a unique blend of natural beauty and progressive policies. With nearly 100,000 lakes and about 70% of its land covered in forests, Swedes enjoy both breathtaking scenery and a high standard of living.
3. Iceland
Holding steady in third place for the second year in a row, Iceland earns a happiness score of 7.525. With a population of just 3,75,436, Iceland is the smallest country on this list, but its natural wonders pack a big punch. From geysers and glaciers to its vibrant music scene, Iceland offers a unique quality of life that keeps its citizens happy.
2. Denmark
Denmark continues to hold the second spot for the fifth consecutive year, scoring 7.583. The country’s strong sense of social trust, excellent work-life balance and high levels of civic engagement make it one of the happiest places on Earth. A founding member of major global organisations like NATO and the UN, Denmark blends tradition with modernity seamlessly.
1. Finland
Once again, the happiness champion of the world is Finland. With a score of 7.741, Finland has now topped the list for seven years running. What’s their secret? Perhaps it’s the endless saunas, the breathtaking wilderness (74% of the country is covered in forests), or the deep-rooted appreciation for a slow and balanced lifestyle. Whatever the reason, Finland continues to set the gold standard for happiness.
While some things change, others stay the same and Finland remains the undisputed leader of joy. Maybe it’s time to pack your bags and see for yourself what makes these nations so happy!
