Senior Hezbollah leader Sheikh Muhammad Ali Hammadi, wanted by the FBI, was gunned down in front of his residence in eastern Lebanon on Tuesday night, according to Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar.
The report suggests that Hammadi was shot dead by miscreants arriving in two vehicles. The Hezbollah leader served as the commander of Hezbollah’s western al-Baqaa region. This comes amid its ongoing conflict with Israel.
Soon after attack, Hammadi was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The motive behind Hammadi’s killing is yet to be ascertained. So far, no official statement has been made in this regard.
Meanwhile, local reports speculate that the killing may have stemmed from a longstanding family feud. Nobody has claimed the responsibility for the killing.
Hammadi had been a fugitive on the FBI’s most-wanted list for decades. He was notorious for his involvement in a high-profile terrorist attack.
Back in 1985, he hijacked a West German airliner, Lufthansa Flight 847, which was carrying 153 passengers, including several Americans. During the hijacking, an American national was tortured and killed. Hammadi’s involvement in this and other acts of violence against Western targets earned him a prominent spot on the US law enforcement agency’s list of wanted criminals.
Middle East Crisis
The murder of the Hezbollah leader comes amid a turbulent period for the militant group which has been involved in conflict with Israel. The group was reportedly involved in the 2024 conflict with Israel, alongside Hamas, which witnessed killing of several top Hezbollah commanders.
Tensions heightened when Israel launched attacks that targeted Hezbollah’s supply chain, including detonating communication equipment across Syria and Israel.
This latest attack on a senior Hezbollah leader comes as the region continues to witness violence and a major IDF military operation in the West Bank. Israeli authorities reported at least nine Palestinians died in a raid on the city of Jenin, with dozens left injured.
Despite 15-months conflict with Israel, Hamas continues to control Gaza that has witnesses houses turning into piles of rubble amid the chaos.
