Japan is not new to devastating earthquakes. It is located on the Ring of Fire, an area of high seismic and volcanic activity on both sides of the Pacific Ocean.

Tatsuki has earlier predicted the 1995 Kobe earthquake.

Japan is among the most popular tourist destinations and known for its rich culture, which includes everything from ancient temples to modern anime. It provides a diverse range of experiences, from bustling cities to natural surroundings, making it appealing to a number of travellers. But following the past few days, Japan’s tourism sector has been facing a major downfall and the reason – the prediction of a natural disaster.

According to CNN, Ryo Tatsuki, a Japanese manga artist, has warned of a major disaster in July 2025. As per the travel companies, tourist interest has decreased due to the prediction. Some agencies reported cancellations of up to 50 per cent during the recent Easter vacations.

Also known as Japan’s ‘new Baba Vanga’, Tatsuki had previously predicted disasters such as the March 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, the 1995 Kobe earthquake and the death of musician Freddie Mercury. She originally revealed her July 2025 predictions in 1999 in a book called The Future I Saw.

Tatsuki predicted a major event in July 2025 in a revised edition of The Future I Saw, published in 2021. According to CNN, she foresees an undersea split between Japan and the Philippines. It also refers to tsunamis three times larger than those in 2011 and ocean waters “boiling,” which some readers feel could indicate an underwater volcanic eruption.

Not just her, several psychics from Japan and Hong Kong have issued similar warnings, causing some tensions online and resulting in an upsurge of travel cancellations from regional destinations. The predicted zone includes a diamond-shaped region that borders Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan and the Northern Mariana Islands, an area renowned for strong seismic activity.

Talking about the scientists, several seismologists have earlier said that accurately predicting when an earthquake might strike is all but impossible. However, Japan is not new to devastating earthquakes. It is located on the Ring of Fire, an area of high seismic and volcanic activity on both sides of the Pacific Ocean.

Due to the predictions, Japan’s tourism has faced a significant downfall, a situation that is expected to continue till July 2025. WWPKG, a Hong Kong-based travel company, said that bookings to Japan for Easter were down by roughly half. CN Yuen, managing director of WWPKG, told CNN that “concerns over Tatsuki’s prediction have been increased by recent advisories from the Chinese embassy in Tokyo.”

Earlier in April this year, the Chinese embassy in Japan cautioned its citizens to be prepared for natural calamities, citing recent earthquake activity and volcano alerts.
