The BJP on Monday filed a complaint before the Election Commission of India against senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. It accused him of making false statements about the Indian Constitution in poll-bound Maharashtra and lying to “create differences between two states”.

Citing a November 6 speech by Gandhi, the BJP’s complaint to the Election Commission (EC) said he has committed “gross violation of electoral laws, model code of conduct (MCC), and criminal law”.

“We wish to bring to your notice the gross violation, of MCC and other electoral and penal laws, by (Shri) Rahul Gandhi of Indian National Congress, while the model code of conduct enforced effective October 15, 2024 in the state of Maharashtra,” the letter stated.

The BJP further alleged that the Congress MP, by saying all plum projects were being diverted from Maharashtra to Gujarat, was trying to “incite” youths of the state, which is “immensely dangerous for the unity and integrity of the nation”.

“As only expected and in line with his typical pattern of campaigning and general conduct, (Shri) Rahul Gandhi’s speech was full of falsehood and lies, intending to create disaffection, enmity and ill-will between the states of Union of India. (Shri) Rahul Gandhi with his misleading statement has tried to create divide between the people of Maharashtra and Gujarat (&) other states. He has been constantly making the false, unsubstantiated, unverified and baseless allegations against the BJP,” the complaint said.

It stated that this is Gandhi’s “nefarious attempt” to create rifts on the “basis of place, caste and religion” and is “solely aimed to achieve the electoral gains in the ongoing assembly elections in the state of Maharashtra”.

Talking about the BJP’s complaint letter to the EC, Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal said Gandhi tried to create differences between two states and lied in Maharashtra — where the assembly elections will be held on November 20 — when he said the BJP wants to divide the country. “There should be an FIR against Rahul Gandhi,” he said.
