Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has admitted that his government “made some mistakes” in its handling of immigration, which has led to record levels of newcomers to the country.

In a video posted to his YouTube channel, Trudeau noted that these issues have now prompted a necessary “big turn” in immigration policy in the country.

In the nearly seven-minute video titled “Why Canada’s changing its immigration system”, Trudeau acknowledged the rapid population growth in Canada over the last two years, comparing it to a “baby boom.”

He also pointed out that some individuals and organisations, including fake colleges and large corporations, have been exploiting the immigration system for their own gain.

“Increasingly bad actors like fake colleges and big chain corporations have been exploiting our immigration system for their own interests,” Trudeau said. “We made some mistakes and that’s why we are taking this big turn.”

The video comes as the ruling Liberal Party faces declining popularity ahead of Canada’s 2025 general election. Trudeau is under intense public scrutiny due to policies that have contributed to a housing shortage, rising inflation, and deteriorating health and transport systems. The opposition Conservative Party has also criticised his government for mismanagement and failing to prioritise the needs of Canadian citizens.
