Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump- their first since implementation of new tariffs by the White House under its so-called “Liberation Day” tariffs.

Donald Trump said in a post on Truth Social, “As Presidents of two Great Nations, this is something that we both look forward to doing. The conversation was focused almost entirely on TRADE. Nothing was discussed concerning Russia/Ukraine, or Iran. We will inform the Media as to scheduling and location of the soon to be meeting. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The call comes after Donald Trump described Xi Jinping as “very tough” and “extremely hard to make a deal with” after accusing Beijing of backtracking on a trade agreement aimed at easing tariffs and restrictions between the world’s two largest economies.

“I like President Xi of China, always have, and always will, but he is VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH,” Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform.

The two world leaders were last known to have spoken to each other in January, before Donald Trump’s second inauguration as president.

US- China Trade War

As friction between Washington and Beijing rises over the collapse of what was touted as a tentative tariff truce, Donald Trump accused China of failing to uphold its commitments to reduce trade barriers, sparking fears of another round of economic retaliation.

In May, negotiators from the United States and China reached a trade agreement in Geneva to significantly reduce tariffs on each other’s goods. Under the deal, the US agreed to lower its tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30%, while China reduced its tariffs on American products from 125% to 10%.

Donald Trump’s Actions Against China

Donald Trump has also widened punitive actions against China by revoking visas for Chinese students enrolled at US universities and imposing new restrictions on the export of specialized software used in designing advanced semiconductors.

Meanwhile, Beijing accused Washington of “seriously violating” the Geneva agreement after the US issued global warnings against the use of Huawei chips, halted sales of chip design software to Chinese firms and cancelled visas for Chinese students.
