US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (local time) spoke to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and the two leaders agreed for an “immediate ceasefire” on all energy and infrastructure in Ukraine. After the call, Trump said that they also discussed “many elements” of a contract for peace and the US and Russia will be working on a complete ceasefire soon.

The two leaders held a phone call for over two hours and held discussions over a range of issues — the primary one being the Ukraine war and a ceasefire.

“My phone conversation today with President Putin of Russia was a very good and productive one. We agreed to an immediate Ceasefire on all Energy and Infrastructure, with an understanding that we will be working quickly to have a Complete Ceasefire and, ultimately, an END to this very horrible War between Russia and Ukraine,” he posted on his social media platform Truth Social.

“This War would have never started if I were President! Many elements of a Contract for Peace were discussed, including the fact that thousands of soldiers are being killed, and both President Putin and President Zelenskyy would like to see it end. That process is now in full force and effect, and we will, hopefully, for the sake of Humanity, get the job done!” Trump added.

During the conversation, Trump proposed to mutually refrain from attacking energy infrastructure facilities for 30 days, to which Putin nodded and gave an immediate directive to his military in this regard.

Mentioning the US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, to which Ukraine has so far agreed, the Russian side outlined several significant points on ensuring effective control over a possible ceasefire along the entire line of combat contact, the need to stop forced mobilisation in Ukraine and rearm the Ukrainian armed forces.

“Serious risks associated with the inability to negotiate of the Kyiv regime, which has repeatedly sabotaged and violated the agreements reached, were also noted. Attention was drawn to the barbaric terrorist crimes committed by Ukrainian militants against the civilian population of the Kursk region,” officials said.

Putin also informed Trump that both the Russian and the Ukrainian sides will exchange prisoners on March 19 — 175 for 175 people.
