One of US President Donald Trump’s supporters said he did not have any regrets voting for him in last year’s election, even after his wife was arrested by federal immigration authorities after they returned from their honeymoon.

Bradley Bartell’s wife, Camila Munoz, is a Peruvian citizen who had reportedly overstayed her visa but was working towards obtaining permanent residency in the United States when she was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials.

Despite the tough ordeal, Bartell remains a Trump supporter, as millions of Americans support the President’s mission to carry out the largest-ever deportation operation in US history. “I don’t regret the vote,” he told Newsweek.

Why Was His Wife Arrested?

Munoz arrived in Wisconsin, US, in 2019 on a work-study visa that expired around the time the COVID-19 pandemic had begun and international travel had almost stopped. She met Bartell while working in farming and hospitality.

Initially, Bartell gave his number on a scrap of paper, which she threw away. However, they later reconnected on Facebook and developed a serious relationship. Bartell and Munoz got married but could not go on a honeymoon due to the pandemic.

The couple finally went on a honeymoon in Puerto Rico in February and upon returning to the US, immigration agents stopped her and asked whether she was an American citizen. When she said she was not but was in the process of obtaining a green card, the agents detained her. She was being held in an ICE facility in Louisiana.

‘Received Hate Messages’

Bartell said the sight of watching his wife getting detained was a “nightmare” to watch. “It’s all been a nightmare really, taking things as they come and moving forward. We have an attorney. The system for getting people through seems to be very inefficient, so it is taking longer than it should,” he told the US media outlet.

Since sharing his story, Bartell said he has faced intense public scrutiny since he was a Trump supporter. “I’ve received a lot of hateful messages, plenty of people saying we deserve this. And a lot of other insults.” He also criticised the ICE and said it needed an urgent reform.

He also thought of moving to Peru if his wife gets deported, although this option would become very difficult for his son. Regarding Trump, he said, “He didn’t create the system, but he does have an opportunity to improve it. Hopefully, all this attention will bring to light how broken it is.”

Several Trump supporters have been similarly affected by the President’s aggressive immigration enforcement policy. Jensy Machado, a naturalised US citizen in northern Virginia who also voted for Trump, was arrested earlier this month.

Fabian Schmidt, a German national who holds a US green card, was detained by US immigration officers on March 7, following his return from a trip to Luxembourg. His family has alleged that he was “stripped naked” and “violently interrogated” before being sent to an ICE detention facility.

Since taking office, Trump has deported thousands of illegal immigrants from the US. A total of 388 Indian nationals have been deported from the US since January 2025, the government informed Parliament on Friday. Of these, 333 were deported directly from the US on three separate military flights in February.
