In an explosive claim over Indian elections, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (local time) once again questioned the need to spend $21 million on voter turnout in India under USAID and speculated that a bid to “get somebody else elected” was underway in the country by the previous Biden administration.
Trump said that the US government would engage with the Modi government over the issue.
This comes after Elon Musk-led DOGE revealed that $21 million was allocated under the USAID in the name of “voter turnout in India”. This created a political uproar in the country.
“Why do we need to spend $21 million on voter turnout in India? I guess they were trying to get somebody else elected. We have got to tell the Indian Government… This is a total breakthrough,” Trump said at the FII PRIORITY Summit.

His remarks came a day after he questioned giving $21 million to India as part of USAID. Notably, Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) decided to cancel the USAID fund designated for India.
Trump had said that India is “one of the highest taxing countries” in the world.
“Why are we giving $21 million to India? They have a lot more money. They are one of the highest taxing countries in the world in terms of us; we can hardly get in there because their tariffs are so high. I have a lot of respect for India and their Prime Minister, but giving $21 million for voter turnout?” Trump said on Tuesday (local time).
