The new travel ban announced by the United States President Donald Trump comes into effect from Monday, June 9. Earlier on Wednesday, US President Trump announced the ban that restricts citizens of several countries from entering the US.

A complete travel ban is in place for nationals from 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

Besides, a partial ban was announced for citizens of Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela, with exceptions granted for major sporting events, some dual nationals and Afghan nationals holding special immigration visas.

Why US Imposed Travel Ban?

According to the White House, this is part of its effort to tighten immigration rules in order to protect national security. It is learnt that the new ban order, given to US embassies across the world, does not restrict those who already have valid visas to enter the country. However, anyone applying for a new US visa from one of the listed countries will go through a strict scrutiny.

This development comes in the wake of the attack on a pro-Israel group in Colorado. While referring to Colorado attack, Trump, in a video message, said the nationals of countries on the ban list pose “terrorism-related” and “public-safety” risks, as well as risks of overstaying their visas. He added that some of these countries had “deficient” screening and vetting or have historically refused to accept their citizens upon return.

For the unversed, the attack in Colorado was carried out by an Egyptian man who set fire to peaceful protesters seeking the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza.
