The doctors enclosed left the woman under the care of three unregistered nurses after which she died from blood loss
The court has ordered two doctors in Malaysia to pay a compensation of 6 million ringgit (Rs 11.42 crore) to the family of a female patient who was left to bleed to death by one of them who went to grab a drink outside the hospital, the South China Morning Post reported.
The decision was delivered by Judge Norliza Othman after the court found Dr M Shanmugam and Dr A Ravi, along with the nurses Izaniey Nataliah Jukimin, Nur Aida Mat Isa and Nessy Yasah, guilty of committing medical negligence because of which the woman died in 2019.
As reported by Sinar Harian, in the judgement the judge said the court was informed that the patient M Punita started experiencing severe bleeding after the delivery of her second child and removal of her placenta.
The judge added that the medical staff assured the family that the patient was stable after which the two doctors went out of the delivery room and the woman was kept under the observation of three unregistered nurses.
Norliza further noted that the health ministry had not qualified the nurses for the job, however, they were given the task of monitoring the patient’s condition.
“However, the deceased’s mother found that her daughter was bleeding heavily, and the nurses tried to stop it by using cotton. The patient was later transferred to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Klang (HTAR) in critical condition,” she said.
“Despite undergoing emergency surgery and a blood transfusion, Punita passed away due to massive blood loss and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC),” the judge added.
Judge Slams Doctor For Failing To Resolve Childbirth Complications
Delivering the verdict, the judge said that the doctors had extensive experience in obstetrics but were not able to resolve common complications related to childbirth which resulted in post-partum haemorrhage (PPH).
The doctors were further criticised for turning a blind eye towards the condition of the patient.
“This tragic incident could have been prevented if the two doctors had acted swiftly by transferring her to HTAR and closely monitoring the patient’s condition, instead of leaving her in the care of nurses while Dr Ravi went out for a drink. This level of neglect is unforgivable as it contributed to the death of a healthy mother,” she added.
The doctors have been asked to pay Rs 11 crore in damages out of which Rs 95 lakh is for the pain and suffering of the dead woman, Rs 1.9 crore is for each of the two children and Rs 57 lakh is for each of the patient’s two parents.
