In a stunning case, British Army personnel caught two soldiers having sex, apparently in an inebriated state, in the cockpit of an Apache combat helicopter belonging to the Army Air Corps during routine maintenance.

The ground crew had finished a night-time servicing of the AH-64 gunship costing 8.5 million pounds (Rs 75 crore), when they noticed that the rotors of the helicopter were swaying up and down and strange noises coming from inside, according to a report by The Mirror.

As the maintenance personnel approached the chopper to fit rain covers over it, they were stunned to discover that two people were crammed into the rear cockpit of the aircraft having sex. A man and a woman soldier were half naked inside the war machine, believed to have been drunk.

A report to the Military Aviation Authority said the male was in uniform and the woman dressed in civilian attire when they were caught having sexual intercourse. They were ordered to exit the cockpit and get dressed. “Both parties were serving soldiers. Both showed symptoms of intoxication,” the report said.

The helicopter was part of the Army Air Corps’ 653 Squadron, armed with a 30 mm cannon and Hellfire missiles. However, the two soldiers were reportedly from a different unit, the Royal Artillery. The two were detained until the chain of command of 653 Squadron and their parent unit arrived, as per the report.

According to The Sun, the incident took place at the Otterburn range in Northumberland in 2016 but has only just become public thanks to a computer glitch. Air crew were reportedly ordered later to secure helicopters in future to prevent a similar incident.
