UK police on Monday launched a criminal investigation into the Glastonbury Festival performances by rap groups Bob Vylan and Kneecap following controversial on-stage remarks about Israel during their Saturday sets.
Avon and Somerset Police in southwest England said a “criminal investigation is now being undertaken” after reviewing “video footage and audio” of both Kneecap and Bob Vylan.
“The investigation will be evidence-led and will closely consider all appropriate legislation, including relating to hate crimes,” police said in a statement.
A senior detective has also been appointed to examine whether any comments made by either artist could amount to a criminal offence.
The police said the investigation would be evidence-led and would carefully consider all relevant legislation, including laws related to hate crimes.
What Happened At Glastonbury
Bob Vylan led the crowd in chants of “Death to the IDF” during their performance on the West Holts stage, sparking backlash from viewers, political leaders, and Jewish advocacy groups.
The BBC, which streamed the performances live, has since said it should have cut the broadcast mid-performance. The broadcaster apologised and said it would review its editorial guidelines for future live events.
The controversy also extended to Irish hip-hop group Kneecap, who took aim at UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer during their performance. Member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, known by his stage name Mo Chara, wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh scarf, told the crowd: “The prime minister of your country, not mine, said he didn’t want us to play, so fuck Keir Starmer.”
Kneecap also condemned Israel during their set, leading chants of “Free Palestine” in front of a massive crowd. According to reports, over 30,000 people gathered at the West Holts stage, many waving Palestinian flags. The area was eventually closed off due to overcrowding.
Meanwhile, the United States said Monday it was revoking visas for members of Bob Vylan in response to their controversial performance.
US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau announced the decision on social media, saying, “We have revoked the US visas for the members of the Bob Vylan band in light of their hateful tirade at Glastonbury, including leading the crowd in death chants.”
He added, “Foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country.”
