In court, Mangione appeared calm, looking around at the reporters, counting them, and even smiling at times
Key suspect in last week’s killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City, Luigi Mangione, had an outburst just before his extradition hearing on murder charges on Tuesday afternoon.
Just before entering the courthouse, Mangione was seen on video pulling away from Blair County Sheriff’s deputies and yelling at the press, “This is completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the American people and their lived experience!” He stopped when pinned against a wall and forced inside. It was unclear what prompted his outburst.

Mangione was denied bail, but he contested extradition to New York. Pennsylvania now has 30 days to secure a warrant for his extradition from Governor Kathy Hochul. He was remanded to the State Correctional Institution in Huntingdon County.
Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks said, “We’re in the process of securing a governor’s warrant from New York, and we’ll be ready when the judge schedules the hearing to return him to New York.”
The extradition process could take up to 30 days.
Mangione’s newly appointed defense attorney, Thomas Dickie, told reporters outside the courthouse, “If you believe in the American criminal justice system, you must presume him innocent. None of us would want anything different if we were in his shoes.”
In court, Mangione appeared calm, looking around at the reporters, counting them, and even smiling at times. He briefly interrupted his attorney, who quickly quieted him.
The 26-year-old former Ivy League student was arrested on Monday. New York’s police commissioner said he was found with a weapon and writings linking him to the ambush.
He was taken into custody after police were alerted by a McDonald’s employee that he had been spotted at the outlet in Pennsylvania, said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Apart from the gun, police also recovered clothing, including a mask consistent with those worn by the wanted individual. “Also recovered was a fraudulent New Jersey ID matching the ID our suspect used to check into his New York City hostel before the shooting incident,” Tisch said.
